The project in a nutshell

This project aims at detecting active methylation of mercury within suspended and settling particles in oxic waters, and at investigating where this process could take place within the internal structure of these particles.

Using sediment traps with a polyacrylamide film at the bottom, we are collecting undisturbed particles at various depths, in order to measure the concentrations of organic and inorganic mercury, chemical and physical properties, as well as particles images.  We hope to determine the potential substrates, in which mercury methylation could take place.
