Life in the deep: colonisation by Dreissena along a depth gradient

The project in a nutshell

Several invasive freshwater species have invaded Swiss lakes in the past. Especially Quagga Mussels, Dreissena bugensis, are challenging our ecosystem by affecting the food web through their high abundance, filtration rate and ability to colonise various substrates in the lake at greater depths.

In our project, we investigate how Quagga Mussels cope with life in a deep lake. We want to know how fast Quagga Mussels colonize and grow on new substrates in Lake Geneva and whether they adapt to different depths.
