In-situ pursuit of whitening events applying on-site analysis and profiling

 

The project in a nutshell

Every year in early summer, after the first algae blooms, calcite precipitates from the surface water layer. This process is often well visible by the change to opaque color of the lake and thus noticed by the public. These so-called ‘whitings’ remove large amounts of calcium and carbonates from the lake surface within only a few days and transport it to the sediments.

Using on-site measurements, automated profiling in the water column and selected sampling, we will trace the time and location of the initial precipitation to define conditions that trigger this processes. We will investigate side effects such as the sorption and removal of phosphorus from surface waters.
