Quantification of Quagga mussels within the EPFL water cooling system (QuagPlore)

The project in a nutshell:
The quagga mussel (Dreissena rostriformis bugensis) is a freshwater invasive species first identified in Switzerland in 2015. This animal is gradually invading all of the country’s lakes, with potentially dramatic effects on the ecosystem. In terms of water use, a negative impact is the clogging of water intake structures such as pipes and grids, which reduces pumping capacity. The aim of this project is to measure the extent and rate of spread of this animal in the EPFL water pipes used for cooling the school facilities. Monitoring the animals from LéXPLORE at the water pumping depth (-75m) is part of this process.
