The project in a nutshell
Whiting occurs in temperate lakes like Lake Geneva when the solubility of calcium carbonate in lake water is exceeded and clouds of solid particles crystalize. This precipitation process can color parts of the lake turquoise for a few days. By screening daily data from ESA’s Sentinel-3 satellites, we enable targeted ground sampling of the whitings’ absorption and scattering properties. Ultimately, these properties will allow the quantification of carbonate precipitation via satellite Earth observation.
